Nanoparticles enable brain tumor treatment
Researchers at the University of Queensland have developed nanoparticles to load chemotherapy drugs into rapidly growing aggressive brain tumors.
Dr. Tasin Janjua, a research team leader at the UQ School of Pharmacy, said the new silica nanoparticles could incorporate the small-molecule drug temozolomide, which is used to treat a tumor known as glioblastoma.
“This chemotherapy drug has its limitations: it doesn’t stay in the blood for too long, it can be pushed out of the brain, and it doesn’t penetrate the blood well into the brain,” Dr. Janjua said.
“To make the drug more effective, we developed ultra-small, large-pore nanoparticles that help the drug cross the blood-brain barrier and penetrate tumors, while also reducing unwanted side effects in patients. Developed.
“This strategy may be a more effective way to treat brain tumors and prevent their recurrence.”
Nanoparticles are one billionth of a meter in size.
Nanoparticle delivery was tested using 3D spheroids, multicellular structures created to mimic brain tumor cell responses and interactions.
The results of the study showed that in mice, the nanoparticles were able to accumulate in the brain within hours without adversely affecting vital organs.
Thousands of people get brain tumors each year and have less than a 23 percent chance of surviving at least five years.
Cancer was the ninth leading cause of cancer death in Australia in 2020, according to Australian Cancer Data.
Research co-author Associate Professor Admiral Poppat Studies are still to be done, but the results are promising for brain cancer patients, he said.
“This innovative drug delivery system could improve the efficacy of brain tumor treatments, potentially leading to new and better treatments for this devastating disease,” said Dr. Popat.
