LIMA (Reuters) – The beleaguered Peruvian health minister announced his resignation late Thursday during an address to parliament amid a dengue epidemic that has already recorded record deaths and infections. .
Lawmakers had summoned a motion to dismiss Health Minister Rosa Gutierrez before he announced his resignation.
President Dina Bolarte accepted her resignation and pledged in a Twitter post to “double down” on efforts to improve public health.
The death toll from the virus outbreak rose to 248, with more than 146,000 reported cases, according to official data.
Over the past week, the number of deaths has increased by 24% and the number of infected cases has surged by more than 12%.
