As the temperature and humidity in the Houston area skyrocket, Fort Bend County Judge KP George encourages residents to take steps to avoid heat-related illnesses.
Overheating can cause febrile seizures, heat stroke and fatigue. Adults over the age of 55, children under the age of 5 and children with chronic illness are considered at high risk and are required to keep the room air-conditioned up to 8 PM daily. George recommends staying indoors from 1pm to 5pm, even if you haven’t been advised about the heat because it’s hot.
“When it’s hot, make sure everyone is cool, hydrated, and informed. George is in a news release to help people working outside, the elderly, infants, and people with chronic illnesses be vulnerable to heat. Therefore, you should check it regularly to make sure it is safe.
“For the next few days, temperatures are expected to stay in the mid-90s to the first half of the year, and everyone needs to be prepared accordingly,” he added.
George and the County Department of Homeland Security are proposing to take precautions against the following summer factors:
Drink more water. Drink the liquid even if you are not thirsty. However, avoid caffeinated alcohol and sugared drinks as they can lose body fluids.
Do exercise or housework outdoors in cold weather, early in the morning or late in the evening.
People working outdoors need to drink large amounts of water or electrolyte replacement drinks if approved by their health care provider. Take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning. If you are new to working or exercising in a hot environment, start slowly and increase your exposure over the course of several weeks.
Be a good neighbor and check out the elderly. Take steps to start FaceTime, Duo, Zoom or window visit with the elderly to monitor for signs of heatstroke. According to this release, older people take almost twice as long to return to core body temperature after getting very hot, and they can determine their physical condition by personal visit rather than by phone.
Choose light colors and loose clothing to evaporate sweat.
Do not leave children, the elderly or pets by the car as the temperature inside can rise quickly and can be fatal.
Wide-brimmed hats help prevent sunburn and heat-related illnesses. Also, wear sunscreen to block the sun’s rays and reduce the risk of sunburn.
If your house does not have air conditioning, take frequent cold baths or showers.
The fan only circulates the air in the room and does not change the temperature, so use it only for air conditioning. Your body temperature may rise even if you are cold.
Please be aware of the heat precautions. A thermal emergency is defined by the National Weather Service when the heat index (temperature and humidity coefficient) reaches 108 degrees for two or more consecutive days.
