Higher COVID-19 mortality in Canada is linked to better chronic disease control
Cardiac researchers say there is a surprising reason that Canada has a higher mortality rate for COVID-19 than many countries with fewer healthcare resources.

Lead author Cindy Yip said he emphasized that worsening heart health would have catastrophic consequences, even if good medical care and technology were available.

She said Canadians have been somewhat vulnerable to pandemics like COVID-19, as they have weathered other health crises.
“People live longer in chronic illnesses like heart disease and stroke, so we need to take action and protect their health to avoid the bad consequences of COVID-19.”

The study examined COVID-19 cases reported between January 21 and April 30 when Canada listed 54,457 confirmed cases and 6.1% case fatality.
The decline in foreign mortality includes 1% in Russia, 5.5% in China and 3.3% in India.
Factors over 65
Yip acknowledged that COVID-19-related deaths were reported differently in different countries, but researchers sought to use comparable numbers.
She said this analysis described a wide range of access to healthcare services across countries. However, there was still a strong relationship between COVID-19 deaths and the prevalence of heart disease and stroke.
For every 1% increase in heart problems, the COVID-19 mortality rate increased by 19%.
Age was also a factor.
With a 1% increase in the population over the age of 65, COVID-19 mortality increased by 9%. According to supplemental data from the study, almost 17% of Canada’s population was 65 or older in 2017.
The study also attempted to count cardiac-related medical treatments postponed by the pandemic, but Yip forces researchers to estimate that the data here are limited.
