Sarasota County 6 Malaria Cases, Mosquito Spray
Sarasota County, Florida — For the first time in 20 years, the United States is dealing with domestically acquired malaria cases.
Sarasota County has at least six confirmed cases.
Malaria is spread by biting an infected female mosquito.
The Sarasota Mosquito Control Manager said the city has been spraying targeted areas and dispatching personnel on foot to look for larvae.
Manager Wade Brennan said there had been no new cases since June 28. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Sixth malaria case confirmed in Sarasota.
Brennan said all ponds and canals in the target area north of Sarasota were inspected and heavily sprayed against mosquitoes.
“Since malaria hit in Sarasota, we’ve treated over 770 miles on our trucks. That’s the equivalent of nighttime spray miles, and we’ve treated over 36,000 acres in this same area.” He said.
Of the 120 pools tested so far, only three have tested positive, Brennan said.
So the general impression here is that the mosquito mitigation strategy seems to work.
