Nunavut establishes mobile tuberculosis clinic in Naujat as infection spreads
The Nunavut Health Authority has opened a community-wide mobile testing clinic in Naujaat in hopes of testing as many people as possible for tuberculosis.
About a year has passed since the tuberculosis epidemic. First declared in a community of 1,200 people May 16, 2023.
Naujaat Mayor Kevin Tegmiar said the village has been asking for such a clinic for several months.
“Without accurate numbers, we don't really know where we are. This clinic will help clear things up,” Tegmial said.
Tegmiar said three Naujaat residents have died since the outbreak began in the community. The Nunavut Health Authority confirmed these numbers in a recent interview with CBC.
Since January 2023, 21 people have been diagnosed with active TB in Naujaat.
An additional 118 people have been diagnosed with latent tuberculosis, nearly double the number reported last November, the agency said.

Health authorities have set a target of testing 1,000 people for tuberculosis in Naujaat by May 30, the end of the clinic.
“We hope that everyone can come and get tested while we're here,” said Nunavut's deputy chief of public health Ekua Agyemang. “If tuberculosis is detected early, it is much easier to treat it in the community.”
The Ministry of Health announced that it would deploy a team of medical personnel, including one doctor, four nurses, an epidemiologist, a radiologist and a laboratory technician.
Canada's chief public health officer, Dr. Theresa Tam, is also scheduled to visit Naujaat this week as part of a tour, along with Nunavut Tunngavik officials and the territory's health minister. Tam also plans to visit Pond Inlet and Iqaluit.
“Although tuberculosis will be the focus of this visit overall, Dr. Tam will also meet with community groups and organizations to discuss homelessness, health education, mental health, and health research initiatives in Nunavut, among other things.” NTI says a news release. Said.
Agyeman said the department visited schools and organized community events to raise awareness about tuberculosis in Naujat in February.
2 other outbreaks
Two other tuberculosis outbreaks remain active in Panniltung and Pond Inlet.
A testing clinic was held in Panniltung last fall, and about 70 percent of the population was able to get tested.
“There is definitely work that still needs to be done, but at the moment they are in a good position in Panniltung,” Agyeman said.
Agyeman said the department does not intend to open a clinic in Pond Inlet at this time. She also could not provide specific information on the number of cases in the community.
