Floods cause spike in mosquito season, West Nile virus detected earlier than usual
Heavy rains and historic flooding have exacerbated an already surging mosquito season.
Metropolitan Mosquito Control officials say the large amount of water added will give helicopters more time to treat the marshes.
“Conditions are much better than this time last year, with helicopters flying in almost every week and having to do a lot of procedures on the ground,” said Alex Carlson, public affairs manager for MMCD.
“Right now, the areas where rivers are flooding are creating new mosquito habitats that we haven't necessarily looked at before. So this is definitely a year of increased mosquito activity, and it's not going to slow down anytime soon,” he added.
But despite the current surge in mosquitoes, Carson says this year overall hasn't been as bad as previous years.
“It's below the average for the past 10 years,” Carlson said, adding that the main reason is a low number of “cattail mosquitoes.”
“[Cattail Mosquitoes are] “It hasn't been out this year because of the drought last year and the year before, but we expected the water levels to be low and that's exactly what's happened,” he said.
But mosquitoes are more than just a nuisance.
In addition to treatment, MMCD also collects and tests thousands of mosquitoes each week. MMCD identified a swarm of mosquitoes that tested positive for West Nile virus in Anoka County on June 18, earlier than normal.
Carlson said this is an early detection of the virus, with most cases occurring later in the summer.
“While most people infected with West Nile virus are asymptomatic, older adults and those with compromised immune systems can become very ill and are notorious for dying from West Nile virus in Minnesota,” Carlson said.
Northeast Metropolitan resident Richard Moberg knows all too well how serious West Nile can be: 20 years ago, after a round of golf, Moberg told 5 Eyewitness News he contracted the virus and was left unconscious for two months.
“For months, I had tubes coming out of me,” Moberg said, adding of his recovery, “I couldn't walk, I couldn't get up, I couldn't lift. [an] “I grabbed the envelope with two fingers. I lost all my strength.”
According to the Minnesota Department of Health, there were no reported cases of West Nile virus in the state as of Monday.
According to the MMCD, there are a few things you can do to protect yourself from mosquito bites.
- Removes excess water from your garden
- Please wear long sleeves and long pants
- Apply insect repellent spray
MMCD added that not all bug sprays are the same, and different active ingredients, such as DEET, may be effective for some people but not others.
