Measles outbreak in Oregon, officials urge vaccination
So far, 25 people have contracted measles across the state in the past two months.
OREGON, USA — The Oregon Health Authority (OHA) noted Thursday that measles was essentially eliminated in 2000. But about 9 percent of the state's kindergarten students remain unvaccinated.
Oregon is currently experiencing its largest measles outbreak since 2019, with cases reported in Marion and Clackamas counties and one case in Multnomah County.
“You have to go back to the early 1990s to see numbers this high, and the reason is that we had very high vaccination rates and very high levels of population immunity,” said Paul Cieslak, MD, medical director for infectious diseases and immunization at OHA.
OHA says that since a decline in measles, mumps and rubella vaccinations (also known as MMR) began in 2000, more parents are opting for non-medical exemptions. Despite the disease spreading easily, “if you are susceptible, you can catch measles simply by breathing the air of someone who coughs. All susceptible family members in a household with a measles patient can contract the disease.” It takes four days for the typical rash to appear. “People who don't yet know they have measles can spread it in public places, on public transportation, in grocery stores, anywhere, and can transmit the disease that way for up to four days.”
That's why Oregon Health Authorities are hoping to stop the spread before the new school year begins. If an unvaccinated child contracts measles, they could be told to stay home for seven to 21 days after exposure, officials have recommended. “Keeping kids in school or child care is an absolute priority,” said Sarah Present, MD, Clackamas County Health Officer. “But measles is a serious disease. It's not just a rash. It has so many complications and up to one to three deaths can occur for every 1,000 children who get measles.”
There are currently 25 cases of measles in Oregon, not all of whom have been vaccinated. To encourage vaccinations, the Oregon Health Authority is hosting free vaccination clinics. Marion County will be hosting clinics at various locations next week, and Clackamas County will be hosting a clinic on Friday at the Gladstone Health Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
