Rabies found in bats in Genesee County
Fenton, Michigan (WNEM) – A bat infected with rabies has been confirmed in Fenton.
The Genesee County Health Department (GCHD) made the announcement on Friday, August 16. According to the health department, this is the first confirmed case of rabies in an animal this year.
GCHD said the bat is dead and there is no further danger to the public as of Friday.
GCHD reminds the public that wildlife activity is increased during this time of year, increasing the chances of contracting rabies. The agency advises people, especially children, to avoid contact with wild, stray or dead animals to protect themselves from the deadly virus.
The rabies virus affects the nervous system of mammals, including humans. Rabies can be transmitted through a bite, scratch or contact with the saliva of a rabid animal.
GCHD said the risk of contracting the rabies virus should not be underestimated, as it can be fatal if left untreated. Rabies treatment is effective if seen by a doctor soon after exposure, usually within 72 hours.
Here's how you can protect yourself and prevent the spread of rabies:
- Keep vaccinations up to date for your dogs, cats, ferrets, horses, cows, sheep and other animals.
- Vaccinations should be administered by a qualified veterinarian and appropriate booster vaccinations can be discussed with guidelines.
- If your pet has been bitten by a wild animal or exposed to a bat, seek veterinary care immediately.
- If you or a family member is bitten or scratched by a wild animal, wash the wound immediately with soap and hot water.
- Contact your physician and state or local health department for further guidance regarding potential rabies exposure and to evaluate the need for rabies vaccination following rabies exposure.
- Do not touch stray, wild or dead animals. Teach children never to touch unfamiliar animals, including wild and domestic animals, even if they appear friendly.
- Do not keep wild animals, bring them into your home, or attempt to nurse sick wild animals.
- Keep pets indoors, supervise them when outdoors, and keep them on a lead at all times when walking to limit contact with wildlife that may be infected with rabies.
Pests can be removed by companies licensed by the Department of Natural Resources, and GCHD recommends that these companies carry liability and workers' compensation insurance.
