Place of residence doubles the chance of being diagnosed with dementia
Phoenix (AZ Family) — Alzheimer's Support Group of Arizona New Research It's a call to action.
Researchers are working where you live You can double your odds This is because people are more likely to be diagnosed with dementia, not because there are fewer cases.
This study shows for the first time that regional differences in diagnosis are related to the quality of the health care system, not to risk levels.
The study used data from Medicare records of nearly 5 million people.
“The rate of diagnosis in people over 65 in Arizona is low, even compared to the rest of the country,” he said. Dr. Julie BynumShe is the principal investigator on the study at the University of Michigan.
She has spent the past few years studying how many people across the country are being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia.
“It doesn't matter what demographic group you're in, whether you're black, Hispanic, white, 85, 70, it matters where you live,” Bynum said.
The two cities with the biggest gaps are Davenport, Iowa, and St. Paul, Minnesota, according to the data.
In St. Paul, people are twice as likely to be diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease as they are in Davenport.
Arizona and Florida are popular destinations for snowbirds, but the study found that people living in Clearwater, Florida, were 25% more likely to be diagnosed than those living in Phoenix.
“Arizona is under-diagnosed and Florida is over-diagnosed, but I don't know from my data why,” Bynum said. “It may have to do with the density of doctors and clinicians.”
Bynum explains that these findings suggest that whether or not people get diagnosed may have more to do with the health care system than with risk factors.
“There are other reasons why things are different in different places, but we think a major part of it is differences in the health care systems in terms of how hard or easy it is to find someone who can give a proper diagnosis,” Bynum said.
Directed by Kinsey McManus of Alzheimer's Association Desert Southwest Chapter.
She said about 11 percent of people over 65 in Arizona have Alzheimer's.
“Arizona has a lower diagnosis rate than other states, so we're probably dealing with a lot more people than we estimate,” McManus said. “Frankly, I think what we're finding is that just about every other state is doing better.”
Another reason the study is of concern in Arizona is because a formal diagnosis is key to getting new drugs on the market that can help slow the progression of the disease.
“If you don't diagnose it early or don't diagnose it at all, you miss out on treatment, and if you do get a diagnosis, you can sign up for clinical trials and things like that,” McManus said. “This is really a call to action for the state of Arizona.”
Experts say drawing attention to this disparity is the first step to creating meaningful change.
“We can connect people to care. We can solve this,” Bynum said.
