The Canadian government is warning pregnant women to discuss the risks of travel before visiting some countries in the Americas due to an outbreak of an insect-borne virus found in sloths.

Study finds Oropouche virus spreads to new places via insects


To date, there is no documented case of the virus being transmitted directly from person to person, but it can be transmitted to the fetus during pregnancy.

“There is concern that the Oropauche virus can be transmitted from pregnant women to their unborn babies, which could result in adverse pregnancy outcomes, including stillbirth and congenital microcephaly (a defect in head/brain development),” the Canadian government said. “Until further evidence is available, pregnant women traveling to affected destinations are encouraged to adhere to insect bite prevention recommendations and discuss the risks of their travel plans with their health care provider,” the advisory said.

Pregnant travelers and other travelers are encouraged to consult with their health care provider at least six weeks before traveling.

While traveling, you can take several precautions to avoid insect bites, such as using insect repellent or spray, using mosquito nets, and covering yourself properly with light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.

Living areas should be protected with screened windows and doors and air conditioning.

Travelers should consider limiting outdoor activities when midges and mosquitoes are most active and wearing approved insecticide-treated clothing.

A Canadian government report said mosquitoes are most active at night, while midges are most active in the afternoon.

Both insects can be found both outside and inside the home.

Oropouche fever: is the insect-borne virus spreading to Canada?


There is currently no specific vaccine or treatment for Oropauche fever, which belongs to the same disease family as Zika and dengue.
