'Better than medicine': Project shows natural prescriptions work | Environment
A large-scale scheme to help people in England connect with nature has led to big improvements in mental health, a report has found.
Thousands of people across England have benefited from prescribing activity in nature to tackle mental illness, a government-backed project has found.
More than 8,000 people have been supported to take part in activities such as nature walks, community gardening, tree planting and wild swimming in what is believed to be the world's largest such project to date.
The results showed that after taking part in the scheme, people's sense of well-being and feelings that their life is worth living were closer to the national average, and anxiety levels dropped significantly. The project also found that the cost of a green prescription was around £500. Seven green prescribing pilot projects were launched with £5.7 million of government funding in 2020. GPs, mental health teams and social workers referred people who needed support to the scheme.

“After the group activities, I feel joy, happiness and calm,” said one of the program's participants. “I feel a sense of accomplishment and improved well-being.”
Another participant, who suffers from a trauma-related mental illness, said, “It works better for me than medication. It works better than CBT. I also get counselling which is really helpful but this is on par with that.”
Participants were assessed before and after participating in the Green Prescription plan. Their average happiness rating rose from 5.3 to 7.5 out of 10, and their sense of worth in life rose from 4.7 to 6.8. Reported anxiety levels dropped from 4.8 to 3.4. One of the sites used medical scales to assess anxiety and depression, and statistically significant improvements were seen in both.
Dr Marion Steiner, a GP in Bristol who is taking part in the Western Region pilot project, said: “Connection with nature is a lifelong resource with proven benefits for mental and physical health – it can help us weather many of life's adversities.”
“However, many of the patients I treat are currently unable to connect with nature in this way due to a variety of personal, social and cultural barriers, which is why Green Social Prescription is so important. As well as reducing a range of prescription and treatment costs for the NHS, the project has the potential to address a number of health needs and reduce the risk of a range of diseases, from diabetes to depression.”
The green prescribing centres were located in Humberside, South Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Manchester, Surrey and the West Coast. Compared to the previous social prescribing scheme, the prescribing centres served a wider range of people, of whom 21% were from ethnic minority groups and 57% were from economically disadvantaged areas.
