Why is the Oropouche virus a concern?
(CNN) — A little-known virus is causing major concern, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sounding the alarm about the Oropauche virus after travel-related cases were reported in the United States and Europe.
It is a disease that is spread by insect bites, particularly those of midges, small flies, and some mosquitoes.
As of August 1 of this year, more than 8,000 cases of Oropauche virus have been reported.
Most of the cases are in South America, but the virus is spreading to other previously unaffected countries.
At least 21 U.S. travelers returning from Cuba have tested positive for the virus.
“The disease can cause severe symptoms within seven days,” said Dr. Lysette Cardona of the Cleveland Clinic.
Symptoms include sudden fever, severe headache, muscle and joint pain, and, in rare cases, infection of the nervous system, causing meningitis or encephalitis, Cardona said.
“Fortunately, most people recover from the disease, but sometimes the illness recurs after a few days,” she said.
Cardona said the Oropouche virus is especially dangerous for pregnant women because there is no vaccine and it can spread to the unborn baby, potentially causing harm.
The best prevention measures are to avoid insect bites, wear loose-fitting long-sleeved shirts and pants, use an EPA-registered insect repellent labeled for use against insects and biting flies, and stay in air-conditioned areas to keep bugs out.
“Most of the cases in the United States have been imported from international travel, but with the recent cases in Cuba, we remain extremely vigilant,” Cardona said.
The CDC said there is currently no evidence of community transmission of Oropouche virus in the United States.
All of the cases have been brought into the country by travelers, but the CDC said the current outbreak raises concerns that Oropouche could spread to the United States.
Scientists said chironomids, an animal that lives on both sides of the country, may be transmitting the Oropouche virus.
