Burundi's MPOX outbreak could be over within weeks, UN health officials say, but progress in Africa's second-worst-hit country depends on securing adequate resources and combating the stigma associated with the disease.

Burundi has reported approximately 600 MPOX cases, the second highest number after the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), but the outbreak is confined to a few areas and no deaths have been reported.

As the disease spread rapidly across Africa, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended MPOX International Public Health Emergency In August. Africa's top health organization He also declared a public health emergency on the African continent.

Paul Ngwakum, regional health adviser for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Eastern and Southern Africa, said on Friday that it was possible to stop transmission and eliminate deaths within a few weeks.

“We have the potential to curb the spread, to contain the virus and end this outbreak without any deaths,” he told reporters by video conference from Bujumbura.

“If we bring all the resources together, I think we can stop this within a few weeks.”

UNICEF is appealing for around US$60 million ($88 million) in aid for Burundi and five other countries.

Democratic Republic of Congo 'unable to cope' with new MPOX strain

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is caused by a virus that is transmitted to humans from infected animals, but can also be transmitted from person to person through close physical contact.

It causes flu-like symptoms and blisters and is usually mild, but can be deadly, especially in people who are battling other illnesses or who are malnourished.

The WHO declared a global emergency in August after a new variant, “lineage 1b,” was identified in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to the WHO, between January and September 8, a total of 25,093 suspected cases of MPOX and 723 deaths were reported across the African continent.

Of these, 21,835 suspected cases and 717 deaths were reported in Congo alone.

“It may be that there are populations that are unable to respond immunologically to the new threat,” WHO spokeswoman Margaret Harris said Friday of potential reasons for the increased death toll from the outbreak.

Cases have been reported in 15 African countries so far, and the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned on Thursday that the outbreak is not yet under control.

UNICEF plans to “dispel myths” about disease

Ngwakum said the UN needed to combat prejudice by raising awareness about MPOX, urging “dispelling myths and allaying fears.”

“It's scary… if people are too scared to speak up, it's going to take a long time,” he added.

Ngwakum said about two-thirds of those infected so far in Burundi are children and UNICEF was working to revive a COVID-19-era distance learning plan to enable children to continue learning in hospitals or at home while in isolation.

The last time the WHO declared a global health emergency regarding MPOX was in 2022, when the original MPOX lineage 2, long endemic in Central Africa, suddenly began spreading around the world.

The epidemic has primarily affected gay and bisexual men, with more than 100,000 reported cases and 222 deaths, according to the WHO.
