Sanford Health cardiologist speaks out about atrial fibrillation after his own diagnosis
SIOUX FALLS, SD (DakotaNewsNow) – September is National Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month and one Sanford Health cardiologist is sharing his experience with atrial fibrillation to warn others.
Dr. Naveen Rajpurohit diagnoses patients with atrial fibrillation and other cardiac conditions across a wide age range, with many causes of atrial fibrillation including genetic history, medical conditions and lifestyle choices.
“We see a wide range of patients with atrial fibrillation. We have people as young as 22 who come into the clinic complaining of palpitations to 85-year-olds who have some sort of heart problem and suffer from atrial fibrillation,” Rajpurohit said.
Attacks of atrial fibrillation may come and go, or may be persistent. Symptoms range from palpitations to less obvious symptoms such as persistent fatigue and shortness of breath. Some people may never experience any symptoms.
Rajpurohit himself experienced atrial fibrillation just a few months ago, when he woke up to find his heart beating irregularly after battling COVID-19 for 10 days.
“I woke up. It was my day off. As soon as I opened my eyes and got out of bed, I felt my heart beating irregularly. We all experience those extra beats here and there or strange sensations in the chest sometimes, but it never went away,” Rajpurohit said.
After about 10 to 15 minutes of this, he put on his smartwatch and got a warning that his heart rhythm was irregular and he should seek medical attention.
“So I put on my Apple Watch and it warned me I had atrial fibrillation,” Rajpurohit said.
Rajpurohit said there have been great advances in technology to identify health issues and risks and alert users. When alerted, people should see a doctor for further testing and a proper diagnosis, he said. But wearable technology is a good start to help recognize such symptoms, he said.
“These are things that need to be seen by a medical professional or a doctor and further tests may be needed to confirm the diagnosis but this is a very good start. If there are warning signs then it could be something serious going on so it's good to seek medical attention and catch any issues early,” Rajpurohit said.
