Weight loss drugs may help with alcohol and opioid addiction, new study shows

The study was published Thursday in a scientific journal. addictionResearchers found that people with opioid or alcohol use disorders who take Ozempic or similar drugs have a 40% lower rate of opioid overdose compared to people who don't take the drug, and are more susceptible to alcohol addiction. We found that the rate appeared to be 50% lower.
Dr. Celine Gounder, medical contributor for CBS News and public health editor for KFF Health News, said these are “significant clinical implications for patients.”
The study used a large dataset, examining nearly 10 years of data from patients in more than 100 health systems across the country.
Previous research has also investigated whether the drug helps people quit smoking.
Gounder said it's possible that in the future these drugs will be prescribed primarily to treat addiction, but more research is needed.
“We need to take the time and look at some randomized clinical trials to prove that this is truly a cause-and-effect relationship. That's also what the FDA needs to expand the indication, and it's not covered by insurance.” But I think it's quite possible that it will happen in the future,” she said on “CBS Mornings.”
But that doesn't mean these drugs are without risks, Gounder cautioned.
