Mosquitoes in Indianapolis area are positive
State health officials report mosquitoes in Marion, Allen, and St. Joseph counties are West Nile virus positive.
As of August 6, West Nile activity has been detected in these three counties, according to a news release from the Indiana Department of Health.
Although no human cases have been detected so far, state health leaders expect West Nile activity to increase throughout the state as the mosquito season progresses.
Mosquitoes in the Indianapolis area have been positive in West Nile every summer since at least 2017. In 2018, two human cases occurred in Marion County. Including the death of one.
“Spending time outside can reduce the risk of COVID-19, but it can increase the risk of mosquito-borne diseases,” said State Health Commissioner Christina Box. “Foogers in all parts of the state need to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites whenever they are outdoors.”
According to the Marion County Department of Health, most infected people are asymptomatic. However, people with certain medical conditions such as cancer and diabetes are at an increased risk of experiencing symptoms such as body aches, rashes, and headaches.
The vaccine cannot block the virus, and the only treatment available is supportive care to address the symptoms caused by the disease.
According to health officials, the best way to prevent getting sick is to prevent mosquito bites.
To do that, they recommend that you stay indoors from dusk to dawn. Wear long sleeves and long pants when you go out. Use insect repellent in DEET or other EPA approved products. Remove all water outside the house.
