Pertussis cases spread to Montana

BILLINGS — Whooping cough is on the rise in the United States, but Montanans are not immune.

This year in Yellowstone County, 11 cases confirmed by RiverStone Healththere were 6 cases in November.

As winter sets in, Riverstone Health is warning patients about how to prevent the spread of the disease.

“Whooping cough is a respiratory infection that is spread from person to person through coughing, talking, and sneezing,” said Dr. Megan Littlefield, chief medical officer at Riverstone Health.

Littlefield said the spike in cases may be due to waning safety concerns, since there was only one confirmed case in Yellowstone County from 2020 to 2023.
