Avian influenza detected in over 930,000 chickens at Darke's egg production facility | Avian Influenza News

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WLIO) – The Ohio Department of Agriculture announced that more than 930,000 chickens at an egg production company in Darke County are affected by avian influenza.

ODA announced that highly pathogenic avian influenza was discovered on December 27th. The facility has been isolated and the birds have been culled to prevent the spread of infection. ODA has not released the name of the facility where the person is being quarantined. Surveillance zones have also been set up to monitor other facilities in the area. This is the first commercial facility in Ohio where avian influenza has been detected this year, according to tracking information from the Department of Agriculture. Another backyard chicken farming experiment took place this year.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the risk to humans is currently low, and bird flu cannot be transmitted to humans through food if chicken and eggs are properly prepared.

The National Veterinary Services Laboratory confirmed the detection of HPAI (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza) involving 931,302 commercial laying hens (chickens) in Darke County on December 27, 2024. If an infection is discovered, ODA will quarantine the facility and reduce the bird population to prevent the spread of the disease. According to USDAHPAI cannot be transmitted from properly cooked meat or eggs. Products from HPAI-affected herds are prohibited from entering the food system. As a general food safety practice, it is recommended that all chicken meat and eggs be handled properly and cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F.
