Health experts warn about link between alcohol and cancer
According to the Surgeon General, approximately 20,000 people die from alcohol-related cancers each year.
IOWA CITY, Iowa — Drinking alcohol can increase your risk of certain types of cancer. This is according to recommendations issued by the U.S. Surgeon General and the Iowa Annual Report on Cancer.
Approximately 20,000 Americans die from alcohol-related cancers each year. The number of people dying from drunk driving accidents has decreased.
Iowans are especially at risk. The state has the fourth-highest rate of alcohol-related cancers and fourth-highest rate of binge drinking, but University of Iowa researchers say the Surgeon General's recommendations could start to change that.
“We probably all know about the link between tobacco use and cancer,” said Paul Gilbert, associate professor in the Department of Community and Behavioral Health. “The level of knowledge about the relationship between alcohol and cancer is still very low.”
Alcohol is probably not the first carcinogen that comes to mind. But Gilbert, who studies alcohol-related behavior, said research showing a link between alcohol and cancer has gotten stronger over the past 20 years.
“It's clear that alcohol disrupts our bodies' natural processes,” Gilbert says.
When a person drinks alcohol, the body breaks down alcohol into usable substances. One of these substances can damage DNA and cause cancer in the mouth, throat, liver, and colon.
“It's a carcinogen that's a byproduct of how our bodies metabolize alcohol, which means it's digested, broken down, and excreted,” Gilbert says.
Alcohol can also affect hormone levels, such as estrogen. It can cause breast cancer in women.
Gilbert said these cancers are of particular concern in Iowa, where cancer rates and binge drinking are high.
“That in itself, and the increase in cancers alone, is an alarming trend, but when you see a link between alcohol and some types of cancer, that kind of raises the bar a little bit.” Gilbert said.
22% of Iowa adults engage in binge drinking, defined as four drinks at a time for women and five drinks at a time for men. The national average is 15%, but any amount of alcohol can increase your risk.
“It's obvious that it's best and healthiest not to drink alcohol at all, but if you do drink alcohol, cutting back or cutting down on it can be a step in the right direction. “It's a step forward,” Gilbert said.
He said the focus is on providing information to people so they can choose how much risk they want to take. He said this was a first step towards encouraging safer drinking.
“We need to get the word out because we can't convince people to change their drinking habits if they don't know the risks,” Gilbert said.
The Surgeon General has recommended adding cancer to alcohol warning labels, which has not changed since 1988. Forty-seven countries require some kind of warning label on alcohol, but only South Korea and Ireland include cancer risks on those labels. It's up to Congress to change the U.S. label.
