Microplastics in the air can cause lung and colon cancer
Tires and deteriorating trash release tiny pieces of plastic into the air, creating a type of air pollution that researchers at the University of California, San Francisco believe may be causing respiratory and other illnesses. I'm thinking.
A review of nearly 3,000 studies shows that these particles are involved in a variety of serious health problems. These include male and female infertility, colon cancer, and decreased lung function. The particles can also contribute to chronic lung inflammation, which can increase the risk of lung cancer.

Small particles are a big problem
At less than 5 millimeters, microplastics are smaller than a grain of rice and are ubiquitous in the environment. Every year, companies around the world produce approximately 460 million tons of plastic. It is predicted to reach 1.1 billion people by 2050.
The main source of plastic in the atmosphere is cars. Friction causes tires to wear down along with the road surface, sending plastic debris flying into the air.

Paints and resins use polymers that are difficult to recycle.

Items such as plastic bags and single-use containers end up fragmenting into microplastics.
This paper is the first systematic review of microplastics using gold standard methods approved by the National Academy of Sciences.
Most of the studies included in the review are animal-based. But the researchers said this conclusion likely applies to humans as well, since humans share many of the same exposures.
The research extends as follows. A report researchers worked on last year in collaboration with the California Policy Evidence Consortium. (CalSPEC). The consortium includes experts from across the UC system and will provide evidence to policymakers in the California Legislature.
“We call on regulators and policy leaders to consider the growing evidence of health risks caused by microplastics, including colon and lung cancer,” said Dr Nicolas Chartres.
Mr Chartres, lead author of the study, leads PRHE's science and policy team and is currently based at the University of Sydney. “We hope that state leaders will take immediate action to prevent further infections.”
