Number of people infected with norovirus gastroenteritis is increasing
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – The CDC says cases of norovirus, a highly contagious and frankly devastating stomach bug, are on the rise in the United States.
“We're actually seeing 300 or 400 more cases than last year,” Valley Health nurse Olivia Legg said.
She says she's been seeing more cases of stomach bugs lately.
“Nausea, diarrhea, loss of appetite, fatigue,” she said, listing some of the symptoms.
These symptoms can be severe and last up to 72 hours. Legg says that for the average healthy adult, symptoms go away on their own. Careful monitoring is required as dangerous amounts of fluid can be lost.
“Because young children, babies, toddlers, etc., and older people usually don't have the same savings that we do,” Legg said.
There are red flags to be aware of in infants and toddlers, and if you notice that their diapers are particularly dry throughout the day, you should see a professional. Additionally, if you are experiencing abdominal pain, high fever, or cannot hold down fluids without vomiting.
“If the kids are really lethargic and not feeling well and tired, and I'm trying hard to say that to cheer them up, then they need to get tested more urgently,” Legg says. .
The CDC says norovirus symptoms can spread even two weeks after you feel better, and products like Lysol won't stop them.
