Humanitarian access improves the quality of Gaza polio vaccination campaigns
The five-day mass polio vaccination campaign on the Gaza Strip ended Wednesday, reaching under-10 children under-10 after accessing five comprehensive, concurrently simultaneously during an ongoing ceasefire. The campaign was carried out as part of an urgent effort to end the ongoing poliovirus outbreak and prevent further spread in the Gaza Strip.
This round saw an additional 40,000 children being vaccinated, compared to the previous two rounds in September and October 2024 after the detection of the poliovirus in the Gaza Strip. The ceasefire allowed health workers to reach children who missed vaccinations due to evacuation during the phased approach, previously living in areas that needed special adjustments for access, or in areas that were unable to reach due to uncertainties in North Gaza, including Jabaria, Beit Rahiya and Beit Hanong.
Strong community engagement and recognition of vaccination benefits maintained high vaccination rates in Gaza Strip, where 89% of children received their third oral polio vaccine in 2023 before the conflict. The round was drawn to 1660 vaccination teams, of which 1242 were mobile and deployed 1242 social mobilizers. Despite the bad weather, families welcomed the initiative and took them to a point where children could receive the polio vaccine.
The campaign was carried out by the Palestinian Ministry of Health and was supported by the United Nations Relief and Labor Bureau of the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), and the Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA).
As part of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative's commitment to gain a robust polio virus outbreak response, surveillance of childhood diseases and viral circulation in the environment has also been strengthened since July 2024.
