You will “get” endometriosis more, but still remain a taboo subject at work
Both male and female people say they understand the challenges women face with endometriosis, but research suggests that it may still be the subject of “taboos” in the workplace.
The charity endometriosis study, published consistently with March being the month of endometriosis action, concludes that endometriosis is currently recognising endometriosis as a gynecological health condition from the list of options.
Although this condition is much better understood by women than by men (82% of women vs. 47% of men), it is clear improvement that 53% reported in 2024 and 49% in 2023 were reported in charities.
Nevertheless, more than a third (37%) of the 2,000 people surveyed say that in principle they will have a comfortable discussion with their workplace colleagues about their duration and menstrual health, but the reality is often different.
Only 11% of men and 20% of women said they actually had an open conversation with their colleagues about period and menstrual health.
When asked how a colleague said he had endometriosis or how he responded to this, 39% of respondents said they suggested ways to seek appropriate support.
The fifth (21%) said they felt they could support someone, and 17% said they knew the relevant HR policy or support services.
A total of 13% said they were worried that it would negatively affect the performance of their colleagues. By comparison, only 6% said they warned people to tell their line managers and said they didn't want to discuss the topic, and even lower 2% said they felt embarrassed to talk about it.
“Endometriosis-Friendly Employers” scheme for Endometriosis UK said: “It is important for employers to create an environment in which staff feel they can open up about their health, and how this affects their work or how it affects issues about other individual, family, and occupational issues.
“It is important to respect that everyone has different boundaries, but employers need to create a safe space so that these conversations take place in a constructive way. This certainly should be true for endometriosis, but unfortunately there is still a level of stigma left in menstrual health and employers need to normalize those conversations.
“We strongly believe that you are sending a strong message that they are being valued by letting staff know that they should be free to talk about various health issues that may affect them. Cultivating an open culture for endometriosis and menstrual health helps people with illnesses to thrive and your organization will help them thrive with them,” Burns added.
