Influenza levels in the US continue to decline, but more children have been confirmed
For the seventh consecutive week, the indicator shows a decline in influenza activity in the US, but it is still above baseline levels, for the 18th consecutive week, with flu-related child deaths reaching 168. Updated weekly.
“Seasonal influenza activity continues to decline, but the CDC is looking forward to several more weeks of flu activity,” the CDC said.
The percentage of outpatient visits for flu-like or respiratory diseases fell from 3.3% the previous week to the final 3.2%, but still exceeds the national baseline of 3.0% (see CDC graph above). As in the previous week, five US regions are below baseline levels.
Only two jurisdictions report advanced or very high flu activity, a sharp drop from the previous week's seven. The number of positive influenza tests was 9.7%, down from 10.7%. Hospitalizations and deaths have both decreased, but the cumulative hospitalization rate this season is the highest since the 2010-11 season.
The deaths of nine new pediatric influenza have brought the season total to 168, according to the CDC. This is compared to 187 and 207 deaths in the last two flu seasons. Seven new deaths were from influenza A and two from influenza B.
