West Nile virus found in sentinel chicken in Tenama County – Red Bluff Daily News
Red Bluff — A press release from the Tehama County Health Department and the Mosquito and Vector Control District confirms that Sentinel chicken in Tehama County is infected with the West Nile virus.
The diagnosis was announced as confirmed by a laboratory in the California Department of Public Health Mediated Diseases section of Sacramento. Sentinel chicken has had blood tests to detect the presence of West Nile virus and has no symptoms.
It is important that county residents take steps to reduce the risk of getting the virus. It was announced that late spring rains caused stagnant water, a source of mosquito breeding. High temperatures contribute to increased mosquito breeding numbers, resulting in an increased risk of virus infection in humans.
West Nile virus can be a serious illness that can affect the central nervous system and is most commonly spread from June to September through bites from infected mosquitoes. Mosquitoes become sick by eating birds with viruses and can infect humans, horses, and other animals.
Only one in five people infected will develop symptoms. This usually occurs 3 to 14 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito, the release says. Symptoms include fever, rash, vomiting, headache, and body aches.
People over the age of 50 or with chronic medical conditions are at the highest risk of getting sick and are more likely to develop serious symptoms when infected.
There are no known vaccines to prevent the disease, but residents can reduce their risk by remembering the following:
Use insect repellents including DEET and follow the label instructions.
Mosquitoes are in the most active dawn and dusk. If you need to get out, use insect repellent and wear long sleeves and pants. Light colored clothing helps mosquitoes land.
Make sure you have the right screens for your doors and windows. Repair your screen and replace it with tears or holes to keep mosquitoes away.
Drain water from flowerpots, buckets, and barrels to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds. Change the pet tableware daily, and change the bath water every week. Drill holes in the tire swing to allow water to drain. Empty the children’s pool and set it aside when not in use.
It was announced that horses could be infected with the West Nile virus and most would recover, but one in three would have to die or be killed. A bitten person may show signs of stumbling, turning, weakness in the hind limbs, inability to stand and muscle tremor. There are vaccines that prevent the West Nile virus in horses, and horse owners should contact their vet for more information.
Residents can help fight the West Nile virus by reporting when dead birds are found. The Health Department recommends that if dead birds are found, residents should not touch or pick them up. Instead, shovel and gloves, or use an inverted plastic bag and place it in a plastic bag.
