At least 250 nursing homes in Ohio have left residents dying in combination with COVID-19 or other health problems.

Deaths were concentrated in a quarter of those facilities, accounting for 60% of all coronavirus deaths in state nursing homes, the Cincinnati Enquirer analysis of federal data shows. According to Ohio records, nursing homes account for the majority of state coronavirus deaths.

The investigators conducted an analysis of federal data after the Ohio authorities refused to identify the nursing home where the resident died. Only about 60% of the 2,710 deaths in nursing homes and other gathering facilities in the United States are included in the federal database. Mortality rates per capita in four nursing homes were so high that one in every two residents was infected with coronavirus. Facilities are located in Coshocton, Monroe, Ottawa, and Wayne counties.

Ten nursing home workers died of the coronavirus.
Only one in a quarter of the nursing homes died.

This is the first time that a complete list of over 240 nursing homes that have died has been published.

Enquirer used a federal tracking system to assist with its reporting, but there are holes in the database.

Why is death concentrated?
