Humboldt County aims to stock COVID-19 gear – Times-Standard
Humboldt County aims to increase the supply of respirators to obviate larger local outbreaks of coronavirus as the number of confirmed cases in the county increases daily.
Dr. Teresa Francovich, a county health officer, said Friday’s health authorities are looking at new technologies to enable patients to share ventilators. Today, St. Joseph’s Hospital in Eureka has more than a dozen respirators.
Francovich also said that the county did not plan to send ventilation to other areas (eg, New York State, which is increasing exponentially each day), and will be using more equipment locally. Use to keep in.
“With the number of cases increasing throughout California, we don’t currently expect to send things to another location,” said Francovich. “We really concentrate on preparing the local area for what we need.”
At the time of reporting, there were 14 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Humboldt County, a number that has surged in the last seven days.
Given the rapid spread of the coronavirus in other parts of California, such as the southern Bay Area of San Francisco, Francovich said there are “lessons” for preparing Humboldt County for the worst.
Health officials are assessing whether any of the county’s most recent cases were the result of a community infection or gave it to another person in Humboldt County.
Almost all cases so far have been the result of travel from other regions, and one case published earlier this week occurred because the patient interacted with another confirmed case.
Residents are told not to leave home except for absolutely necessary purposes.
Some residents around the county wear masks and gloves for routine tasks such as grocery shopping.
Fortuna physician Dr. Stephanie Dittmer said on Friday that a mask (cotton or other) could help, but still very important is washing your hands.
“If you’re wearing a high quality face mask made solely of cotton or poly-cotton, you’ll reduce some of what’s there,” says Dittmer.
Dittmer added that washing his hands with soap (a simple task) was enough to “literally tear this virus”. But she realized that the job was not always easy.
“It’s the idea of trying to make the invisible visible,” she said. “It requires vigilance.”
On Thursday, a representative of the county paramedics said the county had a supply of N95 masks, but warned that no one should reach for a medical-grade mask if they were not needed.
Doing so may reduce local supplies, said Emergency Services office Ryanderby at a supervisory meeting on Thursday.
According to Derby, other masks such as simple bandanas are useful, but can be easily contaminated, especially if they are wet or dirty.
“If the mask comes in contact with people who are considered infectious or exposed, it is a one-time use,” Derby said. “If it was like dust or a wildfire, it was something else, but in this situation it was one and done.”
