West Nile Virus Positives for Mosquitoes Captured by Metro Public Health Test | Davidson County

Nashville, Tennessee (WSMV)-Health officials have confirmed that batches of mosquitoes collected by the Pest Management Department of the Metro Public Health Service have been tested positive for West Nile virus. No human cases have been reported.
Mosquitoes were trapped near the intersection of Mosdale Road and Rural Hill Road.
Health Department pest management staff mailed information on mosquito protection and prevention to an address near where the mosquitoes were captured. In addition, pest management staff will continue to monitor the water standing in search of mosquito larvae. Staff apply granular pesticides where mosquito larvae are.
Staff began catching mosquitoes everywhere in Davidson County in the first week of May. Mosquitoes are sent to the Tennessee Department of Health laboratory for testing. No human cases have been reported in Davidson County, and health officials say they have no plans to spray to kill adult mosquitoes.
The Ministry of Health recommends that you take the following steps to protect yourself from mosquito bites.
- Limit outdoor time at dusk and at night with mosquitoes.
- If you need to be outdoors, wear a mosquito repellent approved for use with the CDC. This includes products containing DEET, picaridin and lemon eucalyptus oils.
- Wear shoes, socks, long-sleeved shirts, and trousers outdoors from dusk to dawn, when mosquitoes are most prevalent. The garment should be light in color and made of a tightly woven material to keep mosquitoes away from the skin. The legs of the trousers should be pushed into the shoe or sock and the collar should be buttoned.
- Make sure the windows and doors have screens and are properly repaired.
Health officials recommend taking steps to reduce mosquito breeding grounds. This too:
- Reduce or eliminate all water in your yard, especially children’s toys, bird baths, gutter clogging, tires, flowerpots, trash cans, and wheelbarrows.
- Ventilate the ornamental pool or stock Gambusia fish.
- Apply a mosquito dunk to the body of water where your property stands.
- Reduce overgrown vegetation (mosquito hiding place).
