Scientists warn that the new strain of coronavirus in pigs “may spread to humans”

A new strain of coronavirus that has recently devastated the pig industry “may spread to humans,” a new study warns.

Caitlin Edwards, who was involved in the study, said: “SADS-CoV is derived from a bat coronavirus called HKU2, a heterogeneous group of viruses distributed around the world.

“It is impossible to predict whether this virus, or a closely related HKU2 bat strain, will emerge and infect human populations.

“However, the wide host range of SADS-CoV, coupled with its ability to replicate in primary human lung and enterocytes, indicates a potential risk of future emergence events in human and animal populations.”

Based on the findings, researchers tested the antiviral drug remdesivir in infected human cells.

Thankfully, the drug has been shown to slow the spread of the virus.

Edwards added: “Promising data using remdesivir provide potential treatment options in the event of human spillover events. Both pig workers and pig populations to prevent outbreaks and major financial losses. It is advisable to continuously monitor for signs of SADS-CoV infection. “
