Twenty minutes after the document gave him sleeping pills, a man who couldn’t speak or move for eight years wakes up.

A man who was paralyzed for eight years after choking a piece of meat and was unable to speak was given sleeping pills by a doctor and regained consciousness.
A 37-year-old woman, known as Richard, regained consciousness only 20 minutes after being given sleeping pills.
Richard from the Netherlands even got out of his wheelchair and walked with the help of a doctor, admitting his family.
He also managed to talk to his father after being unable to say a word for eight years.
In his late twenties, Richard was hospitalized for severe oxygen deficiency after choking a piece of meat.
He was left with severe brain injury and akinetic mutism. This is a rare state of mind in which people cannot speak, eat, or move, but can still open their eyes.
A new study published in the journal Cortex reveals how only 10 mg of the sleeping pill zolpidem helped Richard recover.
Doctors said the pill can temporarily help people with certain types of brain injuries regain a sense of conversation and movement.
“Remarkable effect”
“It was clear that Richard had seen and heard us, but because of his brain injury, he could hardly react to us,” said Willemin van Elp, a PhD student at Radboud University. Said.
Van Elp was trained as an elderly caregiver when he met Richard at a specialized nursing home.
Richard spent the last decade trapped in his head, and his family agreed that doctors could administer the drug, as he had previously said that there was little he could do for his condition. ..
Twenty minutes after taking the pill, Richard was able to operate his wheelchair.
Van Elp said: “Richard’s situation was hopeless, so my family and I decided to give Richard the drug.
“Contrary to all expectations, Zolpidem has had a noticeable effect.
“After taking sleeping pills, Richard started talking, wanted to call his father, and started admitting his brother again.
What is Akinetic Mutism?
Akinetic mutism is a condition that causes a decrease in motivation.
It is a syndrome of varying severity caused by lesions of the frontal lobe.
This can cause the patient to become unresponsive to others and become immobile.
The patient’s mind is usually fully functional.
Treatment depends on the structure of the affected brain.
Previous treatments included magnesium sulphate.
“With help, he could even get up from his wheelchair and walk a short distance.”
After the incident, Richard’s brain was found to have shut down due to sensory overload.
Sleeping pills were able to reduce unwanted brain activity, and Richard was able to regain conversation and movement after about two hours until the drug was ineffective.
Dr. Hisse Arnts of Amsterdam UMC said: “Richard’s brain scan shows overactivity in certain parts of the brain.
“This overactivity causes noise and somehow shuts down” good “brain activity.
“We have found that this sleeping pill can suppress this unwanted brain overactivity and create space for speech and movement.”
I was able to administer the pill once daily for 5 days until it was no longer effective.
Dr. Arns said the windows on how effective the pills would be narrowed and Richard’s ability to speak in these windows was diminished.
Dr. Arns added: “Multiple doses of zolpidem per day did not improve his clinical condition, sometimes even sedating.”
Akinetic mutism has been previously observed in people after surgery and is usually found in people with certain bacterial infections or brain tumors.
Experts are currently looking at long-term solutions that may help Richard and other patients with this particular type of brain injury remain fully conscious.
