Washington announces vaccine program as state-wide cases continue to escalate
Washington is at a critical time, with a surge in COVID-19 cases recorded on both sides of the state.
The proportion of eastern Washington per capita is still higher than in western Washington, and state health officials noted a slow increase in hospitalizations across the state on Wednesday.
“It’s never too late; by acting now, we can crush the curve again,” said Secretary of Health and Welfare John Wiesman.
State health officials encourage people to meet outside when possible and comply with meeting restrictions at each county stage. Phase 2 counties have an out-of-household meeting limit of 5 people per week. In Phase 3 counties, there is a weekly meeting limit of 10 people outside the household.
In Spokane County, the number of cases continues to grow. The Spokane Community Health District confirmed 74 new cases of the virus on Friday. Another resident succumbed to the virus, killing a total of 193 people in the county.
Currently, 43 patients are admitted to Spokane Hospital with COVID-19, 31 of whom are residents of Spokane County.
Wiesman told reporters Wednesday that state hospitals are reporting tighter abilities in bed and staffing than earlier this fall.
Outbreaks continue in a variety of situations, including religious ones.
“One of the most common complaints we hear in a religious environment is about masks,” said Lacy Ferenbach, Deputy Secretary of Health and Welfare. “We are really calling on the leaders of these religious communities to wear masks in the congregation.”

According to Roberts, the Food and Drug Administration is considering distributing vaccine candidates based on population, but it has not yet been decided how many vaccinations each state will receive in the first phase.
Roberts said the State Health Department will closely monitor the FDA and CDC advisory boards and the process when approving vaccines. According to Wiesman, the agency is also discussing independent reviews and monitoring of vaccines in talks with health agencies in Oregon and California.
