Outbreaks of fresh bird flu in the Netherlands and Germany
The Netherlands and Germany ordered the elimination after a new outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza was discovered in poultry farms.
Dutch officials plan to dispose of 200,000 chickens after the discovery of the H5N8 strain of bird flu on a farm in Puiflijk in the eastern Netherlands.
The country experienced the first outbreak of bird flu in 2020 in October, killing 35,700 chickens.
The Dutch poultry industry, worth £ 1.4 billion, is Europe’s largest exporter of chicken and eggs, employing 10,000 people on 2,000 farms.
In Germany, on the other hand, the outbreak affected a small poultry farm in Schleswig-Holstein, the northernmost state of the country.
Wild birds have also been found in the virus. More than 1,000 carcasses of wild birds have been found on the Nordfriesland coast, according to the German broadcaster NDR.
It comes after the poultry farm near Frodsham that Cheshire experienced Outbreak of H5N8 bird flu Monday (November 2nd).
Testing has confirmed that the virus is a highly pathogenic strain and is associated with the virus currently prevalent in Europe.
All 13,000 birds on the farm that lay hatched eggs were disposed of to limit the spread of the disease.
Defra said the case was unrelated to the H5N2 strain identified in a small commercial facility. In Kent the day before..
The Public Health Services (PHE) advised that the risk to public health from viruses was very low, and the Food Standards Agency added that consumers had a very low risk of food safety.
Christine Middlemis, Chief Veterinary Officer in the United Kingdom, said:
“We are urgently looking for evidence of an epidemic of disease associated with this farm in order to control and eliminate it.”
The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) is calling on European countries to enhance farm biosecurity and wild bird testing.
The EU agency said: “Given past experience, Northern and Eastern Europe may be the most vulnerable to new outbreaks.
“When HPAI was detected in the same region of Russia in the summer of 2005 and 2016, the epidemic continued in Northern and Eastern Europe.
“If this pattern is repeated this year, HPAI is expected to arrive in the same region of Europe in the fall or winter.
“It could then spread to countries in Southern and Western Europe.”
