US launches blood test for coronavirus immunity: report
The new test is based on a serologic survey and differs from the nasal swab used to determine if it is currently infected with the virus
According to reports, the United States has begun collecting blood samples from around the country to determine the true number of coronavirus infections, using tests that work retrospectively.
The new test is based on a different serological survey than nasal swabs used to determine if someone is currently infected with the virus.
Instead, it checks for the presence of certain antibodies in the blood. This indicates that the person recovered from the disease after fighting, even if no symptoms were seen.
These tests are seen as a key to gradually mitigating lockdown by allowing those who have demonstrated immunity to rejoin society.
“We have just started testing and will report on these soon,” said Joe Blessie, deputy incident manager for pandemic response at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to StatNews on the Health website.
