Hundreds of Western Michigan Hospital staff test positive for COVID
Health system officials said in a briefing with the media Thursday that more than 700 staff members from 14 hospitals in Western Michigan, Spectrum Health, have tested positive for COVID-19 since November 1.
A case study by the health care system points out that the majority of workers are ill in the community rather than at work, said Darryl Elmouchi, president of Spectrum Health West Michigan, in a media call. The health care system employs about 31,000 workers.
“We actually do very active contact tracing in-house, and over 60% of the majority know where they got it, and most of the time it’s in the community. They’re with friends. I went to dinner and the next day was positive, “Elmouchi explained.
“Approximately 20% of people don’t know where they got it, and 20% generally believe that they might have got it at work. Most of these exposures come from other staff.
“From a staffing perspective, it’s okay now, but like the community, we have a lot of staff infected with COVID-19, so we’re sick,” says Elmouchi.
This is part of a surge in COVID-19 cases occurring throughout the state. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported 7,592 new cases on Thursday, killing an additional 134.
Last week, Michigan broke the weekly coronavirus case record, reporting a total of 44,019 new cases. This is the fifth consecutive week of confirmed infection.
There were 345 coronavirus inpatients at Spectrum’s West Michigan hospital on Thursday. This is an increase of almost 20% compared to the same day that 289 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized last week.
“The situation is definitely getting worse since last week,” Elmouchi said. “Over 13 counties, our main service area, it continues to rise and there are no signs of a decline so far. There is a rise in COVID-19 across the state, and the rise is It is increasing rapidly. “”
Employees also had to miss shifts as local schools were closed and they had to stay home to take care of their children. However, the health system was able to maintain staffing by moving workers, Elmouchi added.
Nurses and doctors who don’t normally work in the ICU were trained last spring to be able to work with COVID-19 patients, he said.
“We were trained and trained for this,” Elmouchi said. “Thankfully, we have large teams and very robust teams, people are regaining slack and others are taking their shifts.”
In the last two weeks, he added, the healthcare system has increased the number of intensive care units by about 30% to accommodate the influx of COVID-19 patients.
“Going through our hospital, we have a row of equipment on a particular floor that we have never had in stock for use in an emergency,” says Elmouchi.
