Alabama patients recovering after an allergic reaction to the COVID vaccine
Patients at Decatur Morgan Hospital showed a severe allergic reaction to the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine on Tuesday and are recovering, according to the state public health service.
“Patients were immediately treated with the anaphylaxis protocol at the vaccinated Decatur Morgan Hospital,” the agency said in a press release Wednesday.
The patient had a history of anaphylaxis or a severe allergic reaction. They chose to vaccinate, knowing that this problem had happened to some people with a similar history.
“Previous anaphylaxis to biopharmacy is a precautionary measure, not a contraindication to the COVID-19 vaccine,” the agency said.
An allergic reaction began minutes after the vaccine was given on Tuesday.
“At this point, the patient seems to be stable and recovering,” the agency said.
Severe allergic reactions to the vaccine are rare. Six people have been reported to develop anaphylaxis nationwide after receiving the Pfizer vaccine. About 614,000 Americans were vaccinated.. In Alabama, 15,286 people, primarily front-line healthcare professionals, receive their first dose of the vaccine.
There are no other reports of anaphylaxis in the state.
