San Francisco — Dental patients in California may one day be required not only to open wide, but also to roll up their sleeves for vaccination.
Some states have already allowed dentists to administer vaccines, a trend that is accelerating during the pandemic.
Natasha Lee, President of the San Francisco Dental Society, said: “I give injections all day for anesthesia, so I am well trained and familiar.
Lee has been practicing for 20 years and is a former president of the California Dental Association.
“In addition, as dentists, we focus on prevention and community services, so it’s another opportunity to get the skills where you need them.”
A dentist survey shows strong support for this idea.
“There are many dentists who say that all of us have to do to put COVID behind us,” Lee said.
On Monday, the CDA welcomed an emergency public health exemption from the California Department of Consumer Affairs and officially allowed dentists to administer the COVID vaccine.
Due to the various rates distributed by the county, only one-third of the vaccines available in California are given.
Most of it remains in storage.
The dentist wants to help increase that pace.
“There are 36,000 licensed dentists in the state, so we have a good army that can help with that bottleneck,” Lee said.
Many dental practice is very busy and demand is increasing as about 70% of patients resume routine care.
The procedure is different: pre-screening and social distance, stepped-up air filtration and oral inhalation, and PPE layered staff.
However, even when working near the patient’s mouth or exhaled breath, the dentistry is virtually free of infection.
“In California, there are no reports of clinical COVID infections in dental offices, and when it comes to infection control, dentistry has always been the gold standard,” said Lee.
Many dentists will now bring their skills to vaccination clinics organized by public health departments and dental schools.
They will swing the needle against COVID instead of cavities.
Others make vaccination part of their personal practice.
“In the future, we can imagine that this will be a normal part of dentistry. Patients who come for annual health checkups and cleanings may also be vaccinated against the flu each year,” said Lee.
The injection itself seems easy to poke the shoulder muscles after a jockey and strangulation reflex around the tongue.
“In the mouth, we’re looking for specific nerves and specific landmarks, so it’s definitely more challenging in the mouth than the deltoid muscles,” Lee smiled.
Dentists need several hours of COVID-specific training as required by the CDC.
But the more pressing hurdle: they have to be vaccinated themselves.
The dentist is in Phase 1A, but because it is Tier 3, he is waiting with many other groups.
To expedite the new vaccine to the community, Governor Gavin Newsom wants to give shots not only to dentists, but also to pharmacy technicians and National Guard members.
