Health leaders say Oregon’s public health workforce has shrunk in recent years to cut budgets
Portland, Oregon (KOIN) —Health leaders have confirmed that Oregon has made a slow and bumpy start in its efforts to deploy the COVID-19 vaccine compared to Washington. A complex initiative is a new strain identified in the Portland region.
Dr. Jennifer Vines, Health Officer of Multnomah County, explained that Washington has a stronger public health infrastructure. Oregon’s public health workforce is declining due to recent budget cuts.
Oregon was also challenging the supply of vaccines and did not know until the very end how many times it would be vaccinated by the federal government.
Multnomah County has received just over 10,000 vaccinations, with an additional 4,100 scheduled on Wednesday.
The more contagious COVID-19 strain, first discovered in the United Kingdom, was discovered last week in Multnomah County. Dr. Vines said the strain is 50% more contagious and is excellent at anchoring to cells in the human nose and throat.
“This particular strain is highly contagious and is presumed to dispel other types of COVID virus,” Vines said. “Based on modeling from the United Kingdom, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that it will take about three months for this more contagious version of the elbow to emerge from others.”
To date, only one person has tested positive for a new strain, but Dr. Vines said there are more likely undetected cases in the community. Development makes efforts to immunize people even more urgent.
