First-line medical staff may suffer from PTSD and “moral injuries,” mental health experts say
Retired paramedics and nurses have been recruited for an expanded mental health support hotline service for frontline NHS workers in Wales.
It will be available to all front line workers, including nurses, paramedics, students and administrative staff.
More than 2,000 ex-doctors, nurses and other health professionals have rejoined NHS Wales to respond to the rising number of coronavirus cases.
Staff often need to treat family members and colleagues, according to psychologists.
The Welsh Government has provided an additional £ 1 million to fund Health for Health Professionals Wales (HHP) services.
It is used to hire additional psychiatrists and health advisors, perform counseling sessions and help workers deal with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
It comes because counselors are hired by the Health Board to provide additional support to staff.
According to HHP Director Debbie Cohen, the service will be available to 10,000 physicians and 60,000 medical staff across Wales.
