Leona Peterson lost hope as the waiting list for COVID-19 vaccinations at hubs around Dallas Fort Worth continued to grow.

“It became clear that we weren’t planning to get vaccinated in Dallas soon, so we started applying in Tarrant and Denton counties where we plan to do speedways, but I go far below those lists. I intended, “said Peterson.

At 4 months of gestation, Peterson qualifies for the 1b priority group vaccine. She is eager to get one for each CDC guidance that suggests that pregnant women may be at increased risk of viral complications.

As the state began distributing the COVID-19 vaccine for Phase 1A and 1B vaccines, the county health department began a waiting list of those wishing to receive the vaccine.

You do not need to be a resident of the county to enroll in the COVID-19 vaccine in that county. Registration is possible for anyone in Texas. For those who do not have internet access, Tarrant County also accepts registrations by phone 817-248-6299. In Dallas County, call the DCHHS Vaccine Hotline at 1-855-IMMUNE9 (1-855-466-8639). In Denton County, call 940-349-2585.

Ten days ago, Peterson’s 68-year-old dad died of COVID-19 after two weeks of hospitalization.

“He was infected with COVID the same week he was supposed to be vaccinated,” Peterson said.

She jumped into the car more enthusiastically than ever when Peterson came across a Facebook post and said that Amarillo was providing vaccines to people in the priority groups 1a and 1b on a first-come, first-served basis.

“I didn’t check the weather. I didn’t pack my clothes. I just went,” Peterson said.

After a five-hour drive and one night at the hotel, Peterson was in line by 6:30 am. She was in the 15th line when the door opened at 9 o’clock.

“People come from Oklahoma, New Mexico, Kansas, Colorado, and even South Texas. People drive from Midland / Odessa, Austin, and Dallas and go home,” said Judge Nancy Tanner of Potter County. Says.

According to Tanner, 45,000 people were vaccinated in a month and a half. She said it made sense to take a walk-up, without feeling the shortage of supplies as many other large counties have around the state.

“In my honest opinion, the appointment is a bit too much paperwork,” Tanner said.

And so far it’s working. Mr Tanner said he had no plans to separate anyone.

More people are planning to get a second vaccination, and Monday is the first day they’ve run out of vaccines, Tanner said. By Tuesday, they were restored and up and running.

“I don’t know why we are special, but it seems to work for us, so we have to share with everyone what we can do,” Tanner said.
