UK's sixth contract for differences round launched

On March 27, the UK government launched the sixth allocation round (AR6) of the Contract for Difference (CfD) scheme, which will run until April 19, 2024. In this round, a variety of renewable technologies, including offshore wind, will compete for government support. .

Round 5 consisted of two auction pots. Port 1 is for established renewable energy technologies, including bottom-fixed offshore wind, and Port 2 is for less established technologies, including floating offshore wind.

In November 2023, the government announced that it had increased the maximum exercise price for offshore wind projects in the next CfD auction by 66% for fixed bottom wind projects and 52% for floating wind projects.

AR6 has the largest budget of any CfD round to date and is comprised of a range of renewable technologies, including offshore wind, solar, onshore wind and tidal, competing for support across three separate auction houses, with the lowest bid winning. .

The majority of the budget (about €1.2 billion) is allocated to offshore wind power, amounting to £800 million (about €934 million).

Last February, Iberdrola announced that the company was preparing the East Anglia One North and East Anglia Two offshore wind projects for AR6.

The 800MW East Anglia One North and 900MW East Anglia Two, proposed to be built more than 30km off the Suffolk coast, received development consent in March 2022.
