Second aircraft carrier shock test records 3.9-magnitude earthquake off Florida coast – KIRO 7 News Seattle

The US Navy’s newest aircraft carrier withstood a second round of tests Friday with explosive eruptions, again recorded as a 3.9-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Florida.

The Navy said this was the second of three complete ship shock trials before the deployment of the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford.

The Navy had previously conducted similar tests on the ship on June 18. During that experiment, explosives also scored the same rating.

The Navy has conducted complete ship shock trials for decades. The most recent was in 2016 aboard the USS Jackson and USS Milwaukee combat ships. The last aircraft carrier to be tested was the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt in 1987.

The aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) @Warship_78, a first in its class, successfully completed the second of three scheduled explosive events for the Full Ship Shock Trials (FSST), on July 16, 2021.
