Boulder County reports first case of West Nile virus
The Boulder Health Department said residents of Longmont were bitten by infected mosquitoes and became ill.
Boulder County, Colorado — A resident of Longmont was infected with the West Nile virus (WNV) Report of the first human incident in Boulder County Boulder County Public Health (BCPH).
The county detected the first positive WNV mosquito pool in the week of July 18 and continues to test the mosquito pool.
Infected mosquitoes infect humans with WNV through bites – most infections are mild – more serious WNV infections can cause:
- Encephalitis (inflammation of the brain)
- Meningitis (inflammation of the inner wall of the brain)
- Loss of sight, paralysis, coma, tremors, convulsions, death
There is no cure, treatment or vaccination for the virus, and healthcare providers can only treat the symptoms to help the patient recover.
“No matter where you live, it’s time to take an active part in protecting yourself and your family from the West Nile virus,” said Marshall Lips, BCPH Environmental Health Specialist. “Prevention is important in WNV, so we require residents to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites.”
The symptoms of WNV are:
- heat
- Extreme fatigue
- headache
- Body pain
- Occasionally a rash on the skin or swelling of the lymph nodes
According to BCPH, most human WNV cases were reported in August and September. The risk of WNV infection is estimated to be high and all residents are advised to take personal safeguards. The risk of infection exists until the first hard freeze.
