Two serious horse viruses identified in Oregon.The state urges owners to vaccinate animals
Salem, Oregon (KTVZ)-The Oregon Department of Agriculture said Friday that it had received six confirmed reports of West Nile virus diagnosed in horses in Oregon in the past two weeks. Another suspicious case is under investigation.
Affected horses live in multiple counties throughout the state, Umatilla, Malheur and Klamath. Recently, none of the infected horses have been vaccinated against WNV, and most horses have never been vaccinated against WNV.
Recently, numerous additional WNV cases have also been reported in Washington, Idaho, and California near the Oregon border. Therefore, ODA recommends annual vaccination as an effective tool to prevent WNV infection in horses.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, Oregon veterinarian Dr. Ryan Schortz of DVM was diagnosed with Equid Alphaherpes virus myelodystrophy (EHV-1) in one horse on a private farm in Lin County and in the second horse. I received a report that I was suspected. The third horse on the same farm was EHV-1 positive and the fourth and fifth horses were exposed.
The two affected horses were euthanized. Preliminary studies have shown that none of the five horses have been removed from the farm or in contact with other horses in the last four weeks. As a result, Dr. Scholz put the farm under quarantine.
EHV-1 is highly contagious. Although there are no known exposures associated with Lin County farms, Dr. Schortz advised horse owners concerned about exposure to monitor horse temperature and contact a veterinarian if fever or clinical symptoms occur.
