Updating progress in combating cystic echinococcosis in Mongolia
Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is most common in poor pastoral communities and is very endemic in most areas of Mongolia where it represents a major health burden, especially to nomadic communities. Intensified efforts in recent years
they were made to control echinococcosis in Mongolia.
1. Development of the “Action Plan for CE Control in Mongolia”
In October 2018, the National Center for Zoonotic Diseases of Mongolia (NCZD) with the support of the WHO organized a multisectoral workshop “Development of a National Action Plan for the control of echinococcosis in Mongolia.” following
workshop, during 2019 a cross-sectoral Action Plan for CE Control in Mongolia was developed, which is now presented to the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture for approval.
2. Facilitate tools for recognizing and monitoring active transmission E. granulosus in the NCZD of Mongolia and the creation of a starting line in Bayankhongor Province.
One of the challenges for CE control was the lack of diagnostic recognition tools E. granulosus infections in dogs. To overcome this, a project funded by PROBITAS FOUNDATION (www.fundacionprobitas.org/en/home)
started in 2019 and was implemented by the NCZD and the Veterinary Institution with the support of the WHO and the University of Melbourne.
The project has two main goals:
- To test a commercial Chinese antiprogengen test that detects E. granulosus infections in dogs on NCZD, so that it can be used to identify endemic areas and used to monitor future echinococcosis control programs in Mongolia.
- Conduct field research for E. granulosus infection of dogs with coproantigen test in Galuut, Bumbugur and Baatsagaan in Bayankhongor province.
Progress so far:
Samples were obtained from 588 dogs, 6 cats, 12 foxes, 5 corsac foxes, and 2 ferrets. The University of Melbourne provided technical advice on insulation Echinococcus, and so far 30 dogs have been infected Echinococcus spp. were detected among 198 specimens. Analysis and validation of copro-antigen continues.
In October 2019, the project team conducted field research on 3 selected Bayankhongor groups to determine the true infection of the host with the participation of the Bayankhongor Province Zoonotic Diseases Center. It started with surveillance
training for local researchers. 345 dog samples were collected and questionnaires were taken from 276 dog owners.
The project team is preparing to conduct training for parasitologists of each of the 21 provincial veterinary departments and zoonotic disease centers, in order to create a surveillance network and identify the final host Echinococcus spp.
The creation of a network of supervisors and skilled workers for detection is considered a priority issue for the implementation of the Action Plan.
3. Ultrasound training and examination
NCZD specialists in collaboration with other health organizations conducted an ultrasound examination for 1,777 children aged 6 to 18 in three souls of Bayanhongor aimaga in October 2019, funded by the WHO. A screening survey revealed 8 cases of hydatid
echinococcosis. Following the screening survey, training was conducted for doctors and veterinarians of Bayankhongor Province on the prevention and diagnosis of infectious diseases.
4. Treatment of dogs
The three-month thawing of dogs with praziquantel has been approved by the director general of the veterinary service in 2020, and 344,300 pet dogs have been treated with praziquantel so far.
