Increased deaths from overdose during a pandemic | Editorial Column
Over 104,000 Americans die from overdose each year. The epidemic of fentanyl is the leading cause of recent overdose deaths, but overdose deaths have been on the rise prior to the pandemic. The coronavirus pandemic exacerbated the crisis.
According to the latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data, 104,288 Americans died from overdose in the 12 months to September 2021. Deaths from overdose in the United States increased by 15.9% over the year. The early months of the pandemic saw an even steeper increase. By mid-2019, the annual death toll from overdose in the United States was less than 69,000. Deaths from overdose in the United States have doubled in six years.
How does Georgia compare to the whole country? The CDC estimates that overdose deaths increased by 26.2% annually in Georgia during the 12 months to September 2021.
Addiction is a treatable illness. These are preventable deaths.
Synthetic opioids, primarily fentanyl, are driving a surge in death from overdose. Almost two-thirds of deaths from overdose are due to synthetic opioids, but deaths from psychostimulants such as cocaine and methamphetamine are also increasing.
According to the DEA, many of the illegal fentanyls are manufactured in foreign secret laboratories and smuggled into the United States via Mexico. After that, it will be distributed nationwide and sold in the illegal drug market.
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the majority of fentanyl-related overdose deaths occurred in the eastern half of the country. One of the reasons for its geographical concentration is that heroin was available primarily in powder form, rather than the black tar heroin that is more common in the West. It is easier to mix fentanyl with powdered heroin. Increasingly, the only heroin available in our country is fentanyl, which is mixed with fentanyl, or the only one purchased is fentanyl, which does not contain heroin in the mixture. The results are often fatal.
The pandemic has made it difficult to smuggle drugs into the United States due to border restrictions and a significant reduction in cross-border traffic. Fentanyl is more powerful, easier to transport in small quantities or as tablets, and easier to transport by mail. Counterfeit prescription drugs made with fentanyl are becoming more common in the United States. These changes contribute to the surge in deaths of heroin users and individuals seeking prescription opioids.
Another factor contributing to the surge in deaths is that pandemics make it difficult for opioid addicts to receive direct treatment. During a pandemic, social isolation and stress increase, exacerbating the likelihood of recurrence in many convalescent individuals.
Response to the COVID-19 pandemic has consumed resources in the public health sector. Other public health issues, including opioid epidemics, have been ignored.
Effective drug education and supportive social networks can prevent the onset of drug use. Drug education can be more effective when combined with consistent messages from families, community organizations, and religious institutions. Your social network can support a drug-free lifestyle, recovery, or addiction.
Efforts to stop drugs need to be improved. It is imperative to delay the illegal smuggling of fentanyl into our country. Efforts must also be made to prevent the distribution and sale of illegal drugs, especially those containing deadly amounts of fentanyl.
You can save lives by distributing naloxone to opioid users, users living with you, and all first responders. Naloxone can reverse opioid overdose, but this is a temporary treatment and should be combined with medical intervention.
Increasing access to a variety of addiction treatment programs, including inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient rehabilitation, and medication, is essential. Due to the lack of cost and insurance coverage, these programs are out of reach for many addicts. Treatment of opioid addiction needs to be designed to be easier to use than illicit drugs. Expanding the scope of Medicaid provides one way to give more Americans access to addiction treatment programs.
