Increased deaths from overdose during a pandemic | Editorial Column
Over 104,000 Americans die from overdose each year. The epidemic of fentanyl is the leading cause of recent overdose deaths, but overdose deaths have been on the rise prior to the pandemic. The coronavirus pandemic exacerbated the crisis.
According to the latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data, 104,288 Americans died from overdose in the 12 months to September 2021. Deaths from overdose in the United States increased by 15.9% over the year. The early months of the pandemic saw an even steeper increase.
