Vandalism in Christchurch’s Red Zone has led to a return of patrols

Christchurch City Council is set to resume security patrols as part of the earthquake-ravaged Red Zone due to increased vandalism.

Patrols on confined lands, which have been cleared of Canterbury earthquake homes, have been halted after the land was transferred from New Zealand’s Department of Land and Information to Christchurch City Council in June last year.

Bebe Frayle, a representative of the Burwood Community Board of Directors and a member of the Dallington Residents Association, said vandalism and graffiti in the area increased dramatically when patrols stopped.

“Welcome to Dalington sign was stolen, we have every piece of furniture we put in the red area, like picnic benches, it was all destroyed or stolen. One day we came and a whole big picnic table was just demolished.”

Three new bridges have been installed in the area to replace bridges damaged in the earthquakes, and Baby Friel said the three bridges were vandalized and stolen, adding $200,000 to the projects’ cost.

Frail said the damage and thefts were severe because the work inside the Red Zone is not funded by the council but is donated by community members.

The table was inside a play area, called Adventure Ave, which was designed and built by kids from nearby Banks Avenue Elementary School.

The Play Zone is one of a number of projects overseen by the Avon-Ōtākaro network within the redzone.

Avon-Ōtākaro network spokeswoman Hayley Guglietta said the table was a large size, about three meters long and two meters wide, and would have required several people to remove it.

“It’s something that can be taken from a public place but it is another thing that can be taken from a public space built by kids and designed by kids. It’s a big piece of wood that someone who has had it should know.”

She said she suspects someone took it to use in their backyard.

Hayley Guglita said there would be no questions asked if it was returned, and they would come to pick it up if needed.

Baby Friel said security patrols will start on Saturday, June 4 and will operate on weekdays from 5 pm until midnight, and on weekends from midday until midnight.

Security patrols will also have a community phone that people can call if they see troubling behavior.

The patrols will focus on the renewal area of ​​Avon Atakaro, where a number of community projects are underway.
