3.8 magnitude earthquake was felt in Cheshire as people reported ‘ground shaking’

A 3.8-magnitude earthquake was felt in Cheshire, the third earthquake to hit the UK in less than 24 hours.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) confirmed that the quake, which was recorded 8km underground, hit parts of Shropshire and southern Cheshire – where many said they felt the movement of their beds and furniture in their homes.

The quake struck just after 3.30pm on Monday, with the epicenter in the village of Wim in Shropshire.

People in Cheshire reported feeling shivering.

One resident, Phil Savory, wrote on Twitter, “Does anyone near Cheshire feel a tremor? They almost fell off a chair.”

According to BGS, the earthquake was felt by many residents of the area (mainly from about 60 kilometers from the epicenter).

She added that people were reporting effects such as “my seat wobbled,” “the house felt like it was moving left to right,” and “a noticeable shaking coming from the floor.”

Others “noted a strange shiver through my office chair, fainted but it lasted for about three seconds” and said “all the windows are shaking.”

This was the third earthquake of higher magnitude than the two to hit the UK in the past 24 hours.

A 2.1-magnitude earthquake was recorded in Arran, North Ayrshire, Scotland just before 8am on Monday.

A 2.3-magnitude earthquake struck Salé, Greater Manchester, at 8.40pm on Sunday, according to BGS.

West Mercia Police and the Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said they had not yet been called in for any reports of earthquake-related incidents.
