Jika, a new research center that facilitates research on dengue fever
Singapore-The new research center will support the fight against mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue and Zika by developing drug treatments.
J & J Satellite Center for Global Health Discovery was launched on Tuesday (June 21st) in partnership with Duke-NUS Medical School and pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson.
Duke-NUS said in a statement that it would focus on diseases caused by flaviviruses for which no specific treatment currently exists.
Flavivirus, which also causes diseases such as West Nile fever, tick-borne encephalitis, and yellow fever, infects about 400 million people each year, Duke NUS said.
According to National Environment Agency statistics, Singapore reported more than 15,800 dengue fever this year. In contrast, 5,258 cases were recorded last year as a whole.
