Deploying monkeypox vaccines in Suffolk, Northwell and Fire Island
Suffolk County will begin distributing monkeypox vaccines to eligible residents at a pop-up clinic run by Northwell Health on Fire Island next week, officials said Friday.
Last week, after the discovery of at least three rare viral infections, the county received the first allocation of 750 monkeypox vaccine doses. Monkeypox is the largest outbreak in the gay and bisexual communities and is primarily caused by close skin-to-skin contact.
“This is a public health issue and we need to stop the epidemic,” he said. State-wide eligibility includes those who have recently been exposed to monkeypox within the last 14 days, those who are at high risk of recent exposure, and those who have skin-to-skin contact with those who have experienced monkeypox symptoms. Suffolk County executive Steve Bellone, along with Kilmnick, Northwell Health Nurse Donna Moravik, and County Health Commissioner Dr. Gregson Piggott, announced the deployment of monkeypox vaccines at the Hauppauge headquarters of the LGBT network.
“This is not the cause of alarms or panics,” Verone said. “This is a rare viral infection and usually does not cause serious illness.”
Piggott also assured the population that the disease was not highly contagious and was not levitating. He added that the health department performed contact tracing on known cases and notified the exposed individuals.
Officials said the county hopes to obtain more vaccines to distribute to the mainland of Suffolk County after dealing with the epidemic on Fire Island.
